Costs

US $ 4000 School Fees + Travel Fees. All leaders accepted for the training must contribute US$200, even if a scholarship is granted .

Costs include accommodation, food and training. Excludes expenses for personal needs, visa application and travelling to South Africa. Limited scholarships are available on request.

Requirements
  1. Discuss your interest in the training with your country or mini-region coordinator for sport ministry. One of them or both need to send us a recommendation that you meet the requirements and give us more information about your current sport ministry involvement before we will consider your application. If you do not know who this person is, please e-mail us at isls@adept.co.za
  2. Complete commitment to honouring Christ and furthering His Kingdom.
  3. Passion for sport and currently involved in sport ministry and leadership.
  4. Outstanding leadership qualities.
  5. Preferably twenty-three (23) to twenty-five (25) years or older.
  6. The ISLS introduces you to the global sport ministry network and will invest a lot of resources in you during the training and in the sport ministry of your country. It is important that you remain part of the global network and we require that
    a) You play a key role in the sport ministry leadership in your country in the next 5 years.
    b) Send reports to the ISLS office during the next 5 years.
  7. A 50% or more (according to American and British standards) ability to speak, read, understand and write English.
  8. It is of primary importance that the training you receive will be implemented effectively in your context on your return. The support you will get from your church and/or other ministry networks will determine the influence you will have as a sport ministry leader. We require that
    a) You have a commitment from the leadership of the church that gives you spiritual covering and/or the ministry network that you are involved in, that they will support you in implementing what you have learned in the training in the next five years.
    b) You stay connected to the national sport ministry and/or ecumenical networks in your country.
  9. The ISLS does not provide finances to pioneer or sustain your sport ministry or for your personal needs. It is important
    a) that you do not expect any future financial support for personal or ministry purposes .
    b) that you have a financial sustainable income for your personal needs and for the sport ministry (in order words that you will not depend on your sport ministry to provide you with an income).
  10. A fitness level of 70% or more, no serious medical conditions and sport injuries. We could request you to submit a medical report by a certified medical practitioner.
  11. Have a passport or apply for one immediately and apply for a visa to South Africa at least 3-6 months prior to departure for South Africa. Your passport must still be valid for 6 months after the training.
  12. Send your application form and the two referee forms to the office by e-mail by 16 May. The application forms will be sent to you on request after we have received the recommendation from your country or mini-region coordinator. Each application is also subject to a screening process.
  13. If not sponsored pay a US$600 deposit by 31 May. The balance of US$ (to be determined) is payable on the first day of the training. If sponsored pay a US$200 contribution by 31 May.

Curriculum
  • Biblical Studies - e.g. OT and NT hermeneutics and expository studies; Mission Principles; Sport Ministry Principles, etc.
  • Sport Ministry Studies - e.g. Sport Ministry’s Philosophy, Principles, Ethics, History and Development; Theory and Practice including Coaching, Chaplaincy, Clinics, Major Events, Resources, Local Church, etc.
  • Leadership Studies - e.g. Profile, Principles, Situational Leadership;
  • Development of Leadership Qualities in oneself and others; Mentorship, etc.
  • Management Studies - e.g. Relationships and Task-orientation; Administration including Information Technology, Marketing, Accounting, Event Planning, etc.
  • Cultural studies - e.g. Anthropology (including Worldview), understanding Cultural Values, Incarnation, Modernism, Post-Modernism, Cross Cultural work, Sporting Cultures, etc.
  • Communication Studies - e.g. Personal Skills including Testimony, Teaching, Bible Studies, Discipling, etc. (methods include use of video, literature, etc.)
  • Personality Development - e.g. Personal, Spiritual, Social, Intellectual, Physical and Psychological growth.
  • Sports Specific Training - e.g. Coaching (Practical and Theory) & Fitness; Physiology; Event planning and Global Community Games.

    Fitness and coaching training content:

    Fitness:

    • Fitness evaluation during the first and last week of training
    • Fitness sessions per week
    • One gymnasium training session per week
    • Athletes in Action specials

    Coaching:

    • A basic course in soccer, volleyball and basketball training
    • Training in how to use a sports clinic
